Your Command Center

The cockpit is where the pilot sits and controls everything. It can look busy, but you only need a few main controls to fly. Let's meet them.

The Yoke

The "steering wheel" in front of you. Pull it back and the nose points up; push it forward and the nose points down; turn it and the wings tilt. You'll use this one the most.

The Throttle

The big lever in the middle. Push it in for more engine power, pull it out for less — like the gas pedal in a car, but for your hand.

The Rudder Pedals

Two pedals on the floor for your feet. They swing the nose left and right and help steer on the ground.

The Flap Switch

Flaps are panels on the wings that let the airplane fly slowly for take-off and landing. Today you'll just find the switch.

One more thing: a big airliner cockpit has over 600 switches. Your Cessna has about 50 — much simpler, and you'll know the important ones by the end of the day.

Instructor Setup

Cold-and-dark Cessna 172 with G1000, parked with the brake set and engine off. Plan about 20 minutes. This session is familiarization only — no flying.

Session Flow

1. Seat & view (3 min). Help the student adjust the seat and eye height. Set the ground rules: hands and feet stay light, and ask before moving anything.
2. Positive exchange of controls (2 min). Teach the three-step handoff — "You have the controls / I have the controls / You have the controls" — and use it every time today.
3. Find the four controls (8 min). Yoke (pitch and roll — show the full range), throttle (in/out), rudder pedals (left/right), flap switch (locate only). Have the student name each one back to you.
4. Power-up checklist (5 min). Walk the master and avionics switches together, reading the checklist aloud, and watch the G1000 PFD and MFD come alive.
5. Wrap (2 min). Quick recap and a preview of "Make It Move."

Keep it hands-on and low-pressure. The goal is comfort and vocabulary, not performance.

Debrief

Confirm the student can point to and name each control on their own before moving on.

• Found and named the yoke, throttle, rudder pedals, and flap switch
• Used the "you have / I have the controls" handoff without being prompted
• Completed the power-up checklist and recognized the G1000 screens
• Understands that the pilot in command is responsible for the aircraft

Next Lesson

Next up is "Make It Move" (K02): the first hands-on flying — pitch with the yoke (nose up and down) and roll (wings tilt) in the air. If naming the controls was shaky today, spend the first two minutes of K02 reviewing them before flying.
