Power and Attitude

Power + Attitude = Performance. Throttle controls speed, pitch controls altitude.

1-min review

What You'll Do Today

Today you learn the most important equation in all of flying: Power + Attitude = Performance. You'll discover that the throttle mostly controls your speed and the yoke (pitch) mostly controls your altitude — and you'll try to slow down without going up or down at all.

  • Add power and watch what happens to your speed
  • Reduce power and feel the airplane slow down
  • Use pitch to hold altitude while you change speed
  • Try the challenge: slow from 110 knots to 90 knots without changing height

By the end you'll understand the throttle-and-pitch teamwork that airline pilots use on every single flight.
