Pitch and Roll

An airplane can move in three directions at once. Today you'll learn the first two, and they both live in the yoke.

Pitch

This is the nose pointing up or down. Pull the yoke toward you and the nose rises. Push it away and the nose drops. The part of the wing that does this is the elevator on the tail.

Roll

This is the wings tilting like a seesaw. Turn the yoke left and the left wing dips. Turn it right and the right wing dips. The panels that do this are the ailerons on the wings.

Here's something cool: an airplane moves in three directions at once — pitch, roll, and yaw. That is one more than a car! You'll meet yaw next time. For now, remember the golden rule: small movements are all you need.

Instructor Setup

Position the Cessna 172 G1000 in the air, trimmed, straight and level at 4,000 feet over open practice airspace before the student takes the controls. Plan about 20 minutes. This is the student's first hands-on flying — keep the air smooth and the demos short.

Session Flow

1. Recap controls (3 min). Quick review of the yoke, throttle, and pedals from K01, and the "you have / I have the controls" handoff.
2. Demonstrate pitch (5 min). Show gentle pull-back and push-forward; have the student watch the nose against the horizon, then try it.
3. Demonstrate roll (5 min). Show small left and right yoke inputs and the wings tilting; let the student feel each one.
4. Straight and level (5 min). Hand over and coach the student to hold wings level and the nose steady for 30 seconds.
5. Wrap (2 min). Recap pitch and roll and preview "Rudder and Trim."

Emphasize light fingertip pressure. The goal is feel and confidence, not precision.

Debrief

Confirm the student connects each yoke input to what the airplane does before moving on.

• Pulled back for nose up and pushed forward for nose down
• Turned the yoke left and right to roll the wings the matching way
• Used small, gentle inputs instead of large ones
• Attempted straight and level flight using the yoke

Next Lesson

Next up is "Rudder and Trim" (K03): yaw with the foot pedals and using trim to take the pressure off the hands. If pitch and roll still feel jerky, spend the first two minutes of K03 re-flying them gently before adding the rudder.
