Fixing a Weird Position

Sometimes a gust, a distraction, or losing track of the horizon leaves the airplane in an unusual attitude. Do not panic — read the instruments and fix it step by step.

Unusual Attitude

Any position you did not mean to be in — nose way up, nose way down, or wings tilted far past a normal turn.

Attitude Indicator

The instrument that shows the airplane against the horizon: blue for sky on top, brown for ground on the bottom. It tells you instantly which way you are pointing.

Nose High and Slow

The nose is pointed up and the speed is dropping. Fix it: add power, lower the nose, and level the wings.

Nose Low and Fast

The nose is pointed down and the speed is building. Fix it: reduce power, level the wings, then gently pull back.

The rule is wings first, then pitch — leveling the wings keeps your pull or push working in the right direction. Here is something cool: airline pilots practice unusual attitude recovery in their simulator every six months, because it is that important. Today you are training the exact same skill.

Instructor Setup

Cessna 172 with G1000 at a safe altitude (around 4,000 feet AGL) over open terrain. Plan about 20 minutes. You will place the airplane into each unusual attitude while the student looks away or closes their eyes briefly, then hand over control.

Session Flow

1. Brief the two cases (4 min). On the ground, walk nose-high/slow and nose-low/fast and the matching fixes. Stress "check the attitude indicator first, wings before pitch."
2. Nose-high recoveries (6 min). Student closes eyes; you set a nose-high, slow attitude and hand off. Student adds power, lowers the nose, levels the wings. Repeat a few times.
3. Nose-low recoveries (6 min). Set a nose-low, fast attitude and hand off. Student reduces power, levels the wings, then gently pulls back. Watch airspeed and avoid overstressing the pull.
4. Mixed surprises (2 min). Alternate cases so the student reads the instrument before acting.
5. Wrap (2 min). Recap and preview "The Spin."

Keep attitudes moderate and recoveries smooth. Use positive exchange of controls every time. The goal is correct diagnosis and order, not aggressive maneuvering.

Debrief

Confirm the student checks the attitude indicator first and recovers in the right order before moving on.
