The Traffic Pattern

The traffic pattern is a rectangle around the runway — it keeps all the airplanes organized and safe.

1-min review

What You'll Do Today

Today you learn to fly the traffic pattern — the rectangular path that planes fly around an airport so everyone stays organized and safe. You will take off, make your turns at the right spots, and fly all the way around to set up for a landing.

  • Learn the five legs of the pattern: upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, and final
  • Climb to pattern altitude — about 1,000 feet above the airport
  • Make your left turns at the right places to fly a nice rectangle
  • Hold your altitude and speed steady all the way around

By the end you'll be able to fly a whole lap around the airport and line up with the runway again — just like the real pilots flying the pattern next to you.
