Using Every Inch

A short runway leaves no room for sloppy flying. You take off using all the pavement and you land precisely, then stop fast.

Short-Field Takeoff

Line up at the very start of the runway, hold the brakes, add full power, then release. Lift off at the lowest safe speed (Vr, about 51 knots) so you use the least pavement.

Best Angle of Climb (Vx)

About 56 knots in a Cessna 172. This speed gains the most height over the shortest distance — perfect for climbing over trees at the end of a short runway.

Short-Field Landing

Approach a little slower (about 61 knots) with full flaps, aim for the numbers, touch down on target, and brake firmly to stop in the shortest distance.

The world record for the shortest takeoff in a Cessna 172 is about 250 feet — less than the length of a football field!

Instructor Setup

C172 G1000 at the home airport, set up with a short runway (or a marked short landing zone). Plan about 20 minutes. Light, steady winds.

Session Flow

1. Brief the technique (3 min). Cover the held-brakes takeoff, Vr 51, Vx 56 climb, and the 61-knot short-field approach.
2. Short-field takeoff (6 min). Line up at the very start; hold brakes, full power, release, rotate at Vr, climb at Vx. Repeat once.
3. Short-field landing (7 min). Approach at 61 knots, full flaps, aim at the numbers, touch down on target, brake firmly. Note the stopping distance.
4. Combine (2 min). Fly one full short-field circuit if time allows.
5. Wrap (2 min). Recap minimum-speed liftoff and firm braking; preview "Grass Strip."

Stress precision over speed. Reset the scenario rather than forcing a long or fast approach down to the runway.

Debrief

• Performed a held-brakes short-field takeoff using the full runway
• Rotated near Vr (51 knots) and climbed at Vx (56 knots)
• Flew the short-field approach at about 61 knots with full flaps
• Touched down on target and braked firmly to stop short
