Graduation Flight

You can fly! From engine start to shutdown, this is your flight to show everything you have learned.

What You'll Do Today

This is it — your graduation flight! Today you fly the whole thing yourself, from a cold and dark cockpit all the way to a clean shutdown. It's your chance to put everything you've learned together into one complete flight.

Start the engine from cold and dark using your checklist
Taxi to the runway with wind correction and stop at the hold short line
Take off, fly the traffic pattern with radio calls, and land
Taxi back, park, and shut down the airplane properly

By the end you'll have flown a complete flight on your own — a real young aviator from start to finish.

Putting It All Together

A complete flight is just all your lessons strung together in order. You already know every piece — today you connect them into one smooth flight.

Start to Shutdown: A full flight runs from engine start, to taxi, takeoff, the traffic pattern, landing, taxi back, and shutdown. Each phase has its own checklist.
Flow and Checklists: Good pilots do the actions from memory in a smooth flow, then check the list to confirm nothing was missed. You'll use both today.
Pilot in Command: Today you're in charge of the whole flight. You make the calls, fly the airplane, and keep it safe — just like a real pilot.

Congratulations — you've completed 42 flight lessons! You now know more about flying than most adults. The sky is yours.

Instructor Setup

C172 G1000 cold and dark at the home airport ramp, brake set. Plan about 20 minutes. Light winds. This is an evaluation-style flight — the student leads, you observe and keep it safe.

Session Flow

Engine start (3 min). Student runs the start checklist from cold and dark: master on, mixture rich, start, avionics on.
Taxi to the runway (4 min). Student taxis with wind correction, runs the before-takeoff check, and stops at the hold short line.
Takeoff and pattern (6 min). Full-power takeoff, climb to pattern altitude, fly the full traffic pattern with radio calls.
Landing and taxi back (5 min). Land, taxi clear, return to parking.
Shutdown and celebrate (2 min). Avionics off, mixture cutoff, master off. Congratulate the student on graduating!

Step in only for safety. Let the student own the flight and the decisions. Make the ending a celebration of how far they've come.

Lesson Plan

Where this fits: Final session drawn from PPL Lesson 14, "Short-Field and Soft-Field Operations," and the capstone of the whole Young Aviators program. The student combines every skill from K01 to K41 into one complete flight.

Prerequisite: K41 (Grass Strip) — and all prior Young Aviators lessons. Student can independently start, taxi, take off, fly the pattern, and land.
Materials: C172 G1000 simulator, full student checklist card, headset, graduation certificate.
Goal for this session: Student can complete a full flight from cold start to shutdown with minimal instructor help.
