Grass Strip

Soft-field technique keeps the nose wheel off the soft surface as long as possible to prevent getting stuck.

1-min review

What You'll Do Today

Today you fly off a soft runway — grass, dirt, or gravel — where the wheels can sink in and slow you down. The trick is to keep the nose wheel light and never stop rolling.

  • Keep the yoke pulled back during taxi and takeoff to lift the nose wheel
  • Don't stop on a soft runway — keep moving so you don't get stuck
  • Lift off at the lowest possible speed, then build speed in ground effect
  • Land as gently as possible and keep the nose up after touchdown

By the end you'll know how bush pilots get in and out of runways made of grass and dirt.
