Level Off
Leveling off means transitioning from climbing to straight and level flight smoothly.
1-min review
What You'll Do Today
Today you learn one of the smoothest moves in flying: leveling off. That's the gentle change from climbing up to flying straight and level. Good pilots plan it early and make it feel like nothing happened at all.
- Start your level-off a little early — about 50 feet before your target
- Lower the nose smoothly to stop climbing
- Reduce the power to a cruise setting
- Trim the airplane so it flies level with a light touch
By the end you'll glide into level flight so smoothly your passengers wouldn't even notice.
