Level Off

A Smooth Level-Off

Leveling off is more than just stopping the climb — it's lowering the nose, setting cruise power, and trimming, all in a smooth order. Here are the ideas you'll use.

Anticipation

Starting early, before you reach your target altitude, so you don't overshoot. In our Cessna you begin about 50 feet early.

Cruise Power

The throttle setting for normal flight — about 2,300 RPM. You reduce from full climb power once you're level.

Trim

The wheel that holds the nose where you set it, so you can fly level with a light touch instead of holding pressure.

Airline pilots start leveling off about 100 feet before their target altitude. In our Cessna, we start about 50 feet early. Reducing power, lowering the nose, then trimming is the order that makes it smooth.

Instructor Setup

Position the Cessna 172 G1000 in a steady climb at around 3,000 feet, calm winds, climbing toward a 4,000-foot target. Plan about 20 minutes. Remind the student of the climb speed and altimeter from K08.

Session Flow

1. Plan the level-off (3 min). Set the target altitude and explain starting 50 feet early.
2. Demonstrate (5 min). Show the order: lower the nose at 3,950 feet, reduce power to about 2,300 RPM, let the speed build, then trim.
3. Student level-off (6 min). Coach the student through a level-off at the target altitude.
4. Trim for cruise (4 min). Have the student trim until the airplane holds level with a light touch around 110 knots.
5. Wrap (2 min). Recap the level-off order; preview "Flying Straight."

Reset and repeat at a new target altitude if time allows. The goal is a smooth, planned transition to level flight.

Debrief

Confirm the student can level off smoothly and trim for cruise before moving on.
