LOFT 12: Morristown to LaGuardia
Corporate flight into major Class B airport with sequencing and speed restrictions.
View FAA WINGS activity on FAASafety.gov →Scenario Overview
Corporate-style flight from Morristown into LaGuardia, one of the busiest airports in the US. The pilot must handle Class B procedures, comply with speed restrictions, manage sequencing with airline traffic, and execute a precision approach into a major airport.

ATC Audio Practice
Real ATC recordings from LiveATC. Practice extracting weather from ATIS and copying IFR clearances at real-world cadence. Learn IFR clearance techniques
These are actual recordings from airport frequencies. The weather, routing, and clearances will differ from the planned scenario — the training value is in listening proficiency and ATC communication cadence.
ATIS
Morristown Airport ATIS — conditions for IFR departure into Class B airspace toward LaGuardia
IFR Clearances
Class B clearance into LaGuardia — includes speed restriction and wake turbulence advisory. Practice copying speed constraints and understanding wake turbulence cautions
Airport Information
| RWY | Length | Surface |
|---|---|---|
| 05/23 | 5,998 ft | asphalt |
| 13/31 | 3,997 ft | asphalt |
| RWY | Length | Surface |

| 4/22 | 7,002 ft | asphalt |

Weather Scenario
A benign weather day with summertime haze over the metro area. LaGuardia is running ILS approaches due to the reduced visibility and low broken ceiling. The challenge here is not weather but traffic management — the pilot will be sequenced with regional jets and mainline carriers, requiring precise speed and altitude compliance.

Lesson Profile
| Phase | Time | Altitude | Events |
|---|---|---|---|
| Briefing & Setup | 0:00-0:20 | Ground | Brief LaGuardia procedures, expected runway, approach plates. Review speed restrictions and wake turbulence categories. Discuss LGA-specific procedures and NOTAMs. |
| Clearance & Departure | 0:20-0:35 | 187-4,000 | Copy clearance via Morristown clearance delivery. Depart RWY 23. Contact NY Approach. Expect immediate vectors toward LGA. |
| Sequencing | 0:35-0:55 | 4,000-3,000 | Receive speed restrictions (maintain 170 knots, reduce to 150). Vectors for sequencing behind regional jet traffic. Multiple frequency changes. Possible holding if LGA has a ground stop. |
| Approach | 0:55-1:20 | 3,000-21 | Cleared ILS RWY 13. Speed restrictions on approach (maintain 150 to CATDO, then approach speed). Configure while maintaining speed. Wake turbulence awareness. |
| Taxi & Debrief Setup | 1:20-1:30 | Ground | Complex taxi at LGA. Hold short instructions. Ground frequency congestion. |
| Debrief | 1:30-2:00 | Ground | Review speed management, sequencing compliance, approach technique. Discuss what makes airline-environment flying different from GA-airport flying. |
Post-LOFT Approach Practice
After the LOFT scenario concludes, practice 2 additional approaches for a total of 3 per session. Session is planned for up to 6 approaches — ask your CFII for additional practice.
Training Objectives

Prepare for Your Session
What speed restrictions should you expect when flying into LaGuardia?
What is wake turbulence and how does it apply when sequenced behind airline traffic?
What are the taxi procedures at LaGuardia that a pilot should be prepared for?
What happens if you cannot comply with an ATC speed restriction?
