LOFT: LaGuardia to Boston
Business jet northeast corridor flight with Class B departure, corridor reroutes, and BOS STAR compression.
View FAA WINGS activity on FAASafety.gov →Scenario Overview
Business aviation northeast corridor flight from LaGuardia to Boston Logan. A business jet owner is flying to a meeting — realistic time pressure in a professional context. The pilot navigates one of the busiest departure environments in the US, handles corridor reroutes, and manages a complex STAR arrival into Boston during peak traffic. Train this scenario on the Vision Jet type rating prep simulator with G3000/GTC avionics displays and GFC500 autopilot at Grand Central, or on the G1000 NXi AATD with King Air B200 configuration.

Weather Scenario
A northeast flow is pushing moisture off the Atlantic into New England. LaGuardia departs in marginal conditions with a low ceiling but manageable visibility. The weather deteriorates as you move north — Hartford shows rain developing by 1400Z, and Boston is the worst with light rain, mist, and ceilings dropping to 1,500 broken with a TEMPO of OVC010. The northeast wind at BOS creates a crosswind component on the 4R approach. This is the classic "it is always worse at the destination" corridor pattern.
Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts
Lesson Profile
| Phase | Time | Altitude | Events |
|---|---|---|---|
| Briefing & Setup | 0:00-0:15 | Ground | Brief LGA SID (runway-specific — expect early turn for noise abatement and EWR/JFK separation). Brief ROBUC3 STAR. Review ILS 4R approach at BOS. Discuss "as filed except via" reroute procedures. ADM discussion: meeting at 12:30 — what happens if delayed? |
| Departure | 0:15-0:28 | 22-FL230 | Depart LGA RWY 4. Runway-specific SID with immediate heading assignment for separation from EWR/JFK traffic. Rapid climb to clear Class B floor. Contact NY Departure — expect immediate frequency change to NY Center. |
| Corridor Transit | 0:28-0:45 | FL230 | Northeast corridor cruise. ATC delivers "as filed except via GREKI MERIT" reroute — must copy, read back, and re-program FMS under time pressure. Multiple frequency changes through NY, Providence, and Boston Center sectors. Monitor BOS weather — update approach brief if conditions change. |
| STAR & Descent | 0:45-1:00 | FL230-3,000 | ROBUC3 arrival into Boston. STAR has tight speed and altitude constraints — ATC compresses everyone into the same flow. Expect 280 knots above FL180, 250 knots at WOONS, 210 knots at ROBUC. Transition to Boston Approach. |
| Approach & Landing | 1:00-1:20 | 3,000-20 | Vectors for ILS RWY 4R. Northeast crosswind with gusts. Break out at 1,500 feet in rain. Multi-runway complex — traffic on 4L parallel. Land in rain on wet runway. |
| Debrief | 1:20-2:00 | Ground | Review: SID compliance, reroute handling speed, STAR altitude/speed management, crosswind approach technique. Business ADM debrief: would you have accepted the approach if conditions were at minimums with the meeting in 45 minutes? What is your personal minimum for this scenario? |
Post-LOFT Approach Practice
After the LOFT scenario concludes, practice 2 additional approaches for a total of 3 per session. Session is planned for up to 6 approaches — ask your CFII for additional practice.
Training Objectives
Proficiency
- Execute Class B departure from LaGuardia with runway-specific SID
- Navigate the northeast corridor with reroute amendments
- Fly the ILS RWY 4R at Boston Logan in MVFR conditions
Progress
- Handle "as filed except via" reroute clearances
- Comply with BOS STAR speed and altitude compression
- Manage professional time pressure without compromising safety
Single-Pilot CRM
- Maintain professional tempo in fast-moving ATC environment
- Brief approach during high-workload corridor transit
- Apply business aviation ADM: on-time versus safe
Prepare for Your Session
What makes LaGuardia departures uniquely challenging?
How do you handle an "as filed except via" reroute clearance?
What are the ROBUC STAR altitude and speed constraints into Boston?
What is the ADM challenge of business aviation time pressure?
