Engine Out!

If the engine quits, the airplane becomes a glider. Stay calm, pitch for best glide speed, find a field to land.

1-min review

What You'll Do Today

Today you practice the most important emergency in flying: what to do if the engine quits right after takeoff. The secret is staying calm — an airplane without an engine is just a glider, and a glider can still fly down to a safe landing.

  • Lower the nose right away to hold your best glide speed
  • Pick the best open field straight ahead of you
  • Learn why you should NOT try to turn back to the runway
  • Glide down and set up for a landing in your chosen spot

By the end you'll know the very first thing to do when the engine goes quiet — and why looking ahead, not behind, keeps you safe.
