Emergency Landing

If you have to land in a field, pick the biggest, flattest, most into-the-wind option you can see.

1-min review

What You'll Do Today

Today you practice choosing where to land if the engine quits away from the airport. With no runway nearby, you become a picker of fields — looking for the biggest, flattest, safest spot and flying a small pattern down to it.

  • Scan the ground for the best landing site
  • Pick a spot that faces into the wind whenever you can
  • Choose a surface that is flat, firm, and long
  • Stay away from trees, power lines, water, and buildings

By the end you'll be able to size up the ground, pick a smart field, and fly a mini traffic pattern to set up your landing.
