How High Can We Go?
Big Idea
The altimeter shows how high you are. Higher altitude means thinner air and less engine power.
Fun Fact
Mount Everest is 29,032 feet high. Our Cessna can only climb to about 14,000 feet — the air gets too thin for the engine!
What You Will Learn
- Read the altimeter on the G1000
- Understand feet above sea level (MSL)
- Maintain the best climb speed (Vy = 74 knots)
- Level off at a target altitude
Simulator Steps
- During the climb, find the altimeter on the G1000 PFD
- Watch the altitude number increase as you climb
- Keep the airspeed needle at about 74 knots (Vy)
- As you approach 4,000 feet, start to push the nose down gently
- Level off — reduce power and trim for level flight
What You Learned
- The altimeter shows altitude in feet
- Vy is the best speed to climb
- Push the nose down to level off at your target altitude
