Level Off
Big Idea
Leveling off means transitioning from climbing to straight and level flight smoothly.
Fun Fact
Airline pilots start leveling off about 100 feet before their target altitude. In our Cessna, we start about 50 feet early.
What You Will Learn
- Anticipate the level-off (start 50 feet early)
- Smoothly push the nose forward
- Reduce power to cruise setting
- Trim for hands-off level flight
Simulator Steps
- Climb toward 4,000 feet — watch the altimeter
- At 3,950 feet, start pushing the nose down gently
- Reduce the throttle to about 2,300 RPM
- Let the speed build to cruise speed (~110 knots)
- Trim the airplane so you can fly with light touch
What You Learned
- Start leveling off 50 feet early
- Reduce power, lower the nose, then trim
- Good pilots make smooth transitions
