Slow Turns
Big Idea
Turning while flying slowly is harder — the stall speed increases in a turn.
Fun Fact
In a 30-degree bank, the stall speed increases by about 7%. In a 60-degree bank, it increases by 41%!
Challenge
Can you make a 90-degree turn in slow flight without the stall horn going off?
What You Will Learn
- Set up in slow flight (55-60 knots)
- Make a gentle turn (15-degree bank max)
- Add a little power to compensate for the turn
- Do NOT let the stall horn sound during the turn
Simulator Steps
- Get into slow flight at about 55 knots
- Start a VERY gentle left turn — only 15 degrees of bank
- Add a tiny bit more power — turning requires more lift
- Watch the airspeed — do NOT let it drop below 50
- Roll wings level and try a gentle right turn
What You Learned
- Stall speed increases in a turn
- Use very shallow banks in slow flight
- Add power to maintain speed during slow turns
